The management company, which has been very active in social media through Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and blogging, is offering the $5 Fridays promotion beginning Oct. 30 and ending Nov. 20.

As part of the promotion, the company will post the note “It’s $5 Friday Time!” to the wall on the Facebook pages of one of its resorts sometime each Friday. The rates are good through the end of 2009, but exclude Thanksgiving and Christmas.

New Sports Complex in Myrtle Beach

There's a new indoor sports complex taking Myrtle Beach by storm. The Plex is a 210,000 square feet tower of fun that has everything you can imagine in the world of sports.

The Plex stretches acrosss 12 acres of Myrtle Beach excitement and die hard sports lovers will definitely feel love at first site.

For only $5 you can go in and play all day, jumping from one sport to another. Feel like shooting some hoops before shooting the soccer ball? Go ahead. Want to lift weights before sinking an eight ball at the billiards table, you can do that to.

There are a host of different things to do to get your blood pumping. Because when it comes to this Myrtle Beach sports complex it's both recreation and straight competition.

Maybe the shot of adrenaline you need is watch two gladiators go at it at Hall of Famer Robert Gibson's wrestling school. You can get all your frustrations out rooting for your favorite guy or training as a student to take down your most hated heel.

For some, pro wrestling's not their thing. That's cool. You might prefer to try your hands at Mixed Martial Arts. The Plex is home to Karate, which is taught by a world class instructor. Then again, gymnastics might be more your speed. Hop, skip and flip your way over to the Ultimate Gymnastics Academy.

But The Plex isn't all about training and recreational competition, it's main theme is simply having fun.

They offer an After School Program where kids can participate in all the sporting activities, get help with their homework and have access to Wi-Fi.

This Myrtle Beach sports complex is also turned into a fun and exciting roller rink so your can dance and skate the night away.

There's so much fun it can barely be contained under one roof... even if it is 210,000 square feet. And with it being just off of 501, next to Freestyle Music Park, you're always only minutes away from all the excitement.

CCU Play Set to Debut This Week

It's showtime folks. Coastal Carolina University Theatre takes the stage once again, this time with the controversial play "Spring Awakening."

Written by Frank Wedekind in 1891, this play centers around teens awkwardness and discovery of sexual awareness. This rock musical is being preformed all over the country, as the Broadway adaptation recently was awarded 8 Tony awards and is touring the country.

The students of CCU may not be on Broadway, yet, but they definitely will live up to the hype as they bring you they captivate you with this less than comfortable subject.

The cast of twenty-four will draw you in to topics of teenage desire, suicide, abortion and homosexuality. All of which are affecting today's youth.

It's a play that almost everyone can relate to. If the night's subject didn't happen to you, you probably know somebody who did go through it. This play is as real as it gets and it will be sure to take you through a full range of emotions.

Get ready for a night filled with adventure and excitement. The cast at CCU is backed by the faculty rock band Virtue Trap, who could not have a more fitting name, and they are sure to have you on your feet in hope of an encore.

General admission is $15; teens (11-17) and children (10 and under) are $5; alumni, senior citizens (65+) and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members are $10; Coastal Carolina University and Horry Georgetown Technical College students are $5 per valid ID; and Coastal Carolina University and HGTC faculty and staff are $10 per valid ID. What your money can buy in Myrtle Beach area

Adva Saldinger - asaldinger@thesunnews.com

Home prices along the Grand Strand continue to decline as short sales and foreclosures persist, and for some buyers this creates the chance to get a house they thought was out of reach.

The median home price - the price where half of homes sold for more and half of homes sold for less - was $176,000 this past quarter, down 12 percent from the same period last year, according to the Multiple Listing Service.

The declining median price is partly because lower-priced houses are selling at a higher rate - 74.7 percent of homes along the Grand Strand sold for less than $250,000 this year, according to Site Tech Systems, a local company that tracks the real estate market.

The low prices mean Laura Barr, who is buying a new house, can afford the house she wants that is bigger and closer to the beach than ones in her price range a few years ago.

Myrtle Beach's Holiday Harvest At Broadway At The Beach Celebrates South Carolina Community Pride

Myrtle Beach, S.C. (PRWEB) October 11, 2009 -- Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach, S.C. will be the site of a new fall festival designed to celebrate South Carolina community pride and showcase the bounty of South Carolina's agricultural industry, foods, wines and culinary expertise. Broadway at the Beach is partnering with the South Carolina Department of Agriculture and the South Carolina Cooperative Extension at Clemson University to stage a 15-day "Holiday Harvest" event that will take place from October 24 through November 7, 2009.

The festival will offer a wide variety of activities including live entertainment, a Farmers Market, wine tastings of selected South Carolina wines, a beer garden, and educational demonstrations -- all held at scheduled times throughout the event. A "Carolina Cook-Off" judged by a panel of regional celebrities, will feature dishes made with South Carolina products.

"This is South Carolina's opportunity to shine as we celebrate the special things that we South Carolinians have to be proud of," said Michelle Sutton, vice president of sales & marketing for Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc. which owns and operates Broadway at the Beach. "South Carolina has a rich agricultural heritage and the Holiday Harvest will focus on that heritage.

Holiday Harvest will have the atmosphere of a fair with contests and other fun activities for everyone from children through adults. We'll also provide learning opportunities. We'll host school classes and provide presentations by 4H clubs, as well as explore how South Carolina approaches the important issue of recycling. From live entertainment to the Farmer's Market to booths brimming with regional foods, this will be a special festival that shines the spotlight on the best of South Carolina."

The 15-day festival will be alive with sites and activities like a massive Pumpkin Pyramid (made up of more than 3,000 pumpkins). An intriguing Hay Maze will be constructed on site and an impressive collection of antique tractors that once worked the fields of South Carolina farms will also be on display. Numerous booths will offer fall/winter food specialities. Hay rides and sleigh rides will be available, and pumpkin decorating, face painting and a pumpkin pie eating contest will add to the atmosphere of fun.

On October 31, the Holiday Harvest will provide a safe and secure venue for parents to bring children to Trick or Treat, enjoy a haunted Hay Maze, and hear tales of South Carolina ghosts.

As fall comes to a close and the Christmas season draws near, the Holiday Harvest festival will change into a Christmas wonderland. Hay rides will become sleigh rides and the area will come alive for Christmas. In celebration of the beginning of the holidays, the festival will conclude with the annual Broadway at the Beach Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 7.

"This is the first time that a festival of this size has been held to showcase the best of South Carolina's agricultural community and we're honored to hold it at Broadway at the Beach," said Sutton. "Broadway at the Beach was originally conceived as a festival marketplace, so it's the perfect venue for the Holiday Harvest. We have the space to accommodate all the various activities and showcase large displays like the antique tractors and Farmers Market. We also have the space to grow the event and we are looking for it to become a South Carolina tradition. We have a lot to be proud of in South Carolina, and the Holiday Harvest is a wonderful way to celebrate that."

More information on the Holiday Harvest event is available online at HolidayHarvest.com or by calling 1-866-553-4508.

Caribbean Resort & Villas: Raising the bar for golfers in Myrtle Beach

Lisa Allen, Contributor for TravelGolf.com

MYRTLE BEACH
, S.C. - The Caribbean Resort & Villas on the Atlantic Ocean in Myrtle Beach has raised the bar on the beach again.

Over its 40 years, the resort has grown like a mushroom along both sides of Ocean Boulevard, stretching from 28th to 31st Avenues. Myrtle Beach golfers can choose from an array of accommodations
, from the villas at Chelsea House on the lee side of Ocean Boulevard to the smaller Jamaican House or the newly renovated Dominican Tower.

But the big boy on the Strand now is the spanking-new Cayman Tower, 21 stories of luxury that opened in June.

As soon as you pull up to register in the new Caribbean-style lobby for any of the 480 rooms at the resort, staff is there to greet you, help you with your bags and direct you to convenient parking across the street.
The Caribbean Resort & Villas' Cayman Tower

The new Cayman features 2-, 3- or 4-bedroom suites, all with ocean views and balconies. They are perfectly appointed, with ceramic tile in the hall, kitchen and bathrooms (providing a convenient path for sand-encrusted children to the bath and laundry), flat-screen, HD televisions in the living room and each bedroom, and stainless-steel kitchen appliances, down to toasters and coffee pots. Yes, you'll want to live there.

One of the many impressive aspects of the Cayman Tower is the quiet. Once inside your suite, you can't hear your neighbors, and if you shut the sliding door, even the ocean falls silent. It's your own little relaxation bubble amid the hustle and bustle of Myrtle Beach.

The list of amenities each guest receives extends a page: coin laundry, cribs, fax and copy services, game room, gift shop, fitness room, business center and wireless Internet.

And with the new tower came a water park next door, with a water slide and kiddie pools. In all, there are an even dozen pools, rivers and hot tubs for Cayman, Jamaican and Dominican guests. At the south end is a snack bar and tiki hut for refreshments, and during peak season, an ice-cream shack amid the pools is staffed. Rows of chaise lounges give sunbathers a choice of overlooking the pools or the ocean.

If you're looking for a great meal, right between the new water park and the Jamaican House is the Sea Captain's House, one of Myrtle Beach's premier restaurants. To accommodate its many neighbors, the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. One can order from the menu for breakfast or opt for the buffet, which has 90 percent of the menu. Dinner and lunch remain their delicious selves with an array of steaks and seafood, complemented by a lengthy wine list.

And if you're a golfer, the Caribbean Resort & Villas will set you up. "We book thousands of golf rounds each year," said Adam Townsend, assistant general manager. "We always have the best, lowest golf rates, even at private courses."

In both fall and spring, the resort hosts a weekly reception for golfers, complete with drinks and hors d' oeuvres.

Caribbean Resort & Villas has perfected resort accommodations in Myrtle Beach over its 40 years, and it maintains its edge through service, maintenance and amenities. It's nice to see that some things don't change. For more information, see www.caribbeanresort.com.

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Dunes Golf & Beach Club has been named to the 2010 Golf World Readers’ Choice Awards, as announced in the magazine’s September 28 issue.

Coastal Carolina University ranked in Forbes America's 'Best Colleges' list

CCU

Coastal Carolina University has been ranked in the top 15 percent of the nation's four-year undergraduate institutions in "America's Best Colleges 2009," compiled by Forbes and the Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP).

"This is the first year that Coastal Carolina University has been included in this list, and we're very excited to be on it," said President David A. DeCenzo. "It indicates that notice is being taken of the excellence of this institution and how far we've come in our relatively short history." Six hundred colleges and universities are on the list, including 14 South Carolina institutions of higher learning. Coastal Carolina is 600 in the rankings.

"It is important to note that if a school appears on this list at all, that indicates a certain level of quality…" states the report from Forbes.com. "The CCAP ranks only the top 15 percent or so of all undergraduate institutions."

The rankings are based on the quality of education provided, the experience of students and how much they achieve.

"To our way of thinking a good college is one that meets student needs," the report states. "While some college rankings are based partly on school reputation as evaluated by college administrators and on the amount of money spent, we focus on things which directly concern students. Will my course be interesting and rewarding? Will I get a good job after I graduate? Is it likely I will graduate in four years? Will I incur a ton of debt getting my degree?"

This is only the second year that Forbes has been ranking colleges and universities. The methodology includes the following criteria:

The Sun News

"I've been chasing a 40-year dream," said Paul Cummings, who opened the Wheels of Yesteryear Auto Showcase at 413 Hospitality, near the Myrtle Beach Speedway, on Wednesday. Cummings said the museum will house more than 50 vintage American-made automobiles and trucks from his collection of more than 100.

He's been collecting them for many years, he said.

"I want to let as many people enjoy them as much as I have through the years. It was time to pull the blankets off them and share," he said.

Cummings and family members, including his wife, Carol, will run the museum, which will be open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. Admission varies by age.

Myrtle Beach area supports ban on texting

mnewton@thesunnews.com

Im drivn rgt now. Wat r u doin?

Some local residents and legislators are supportive of a push in national legislation - which debuted last week - that would make this kind of text illegal.

"I'm certainly in favor of it," said Rep. Vida Miller, D-Pawleys Island. "That's like using a typewriter while driving, and it's a very, very dangerous thing to do. I just don't see how anybody can concentrate on driving while text messaging. I have nothing against text messaging, just not while you're driving."

The legislation, pushed by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., would require states to ban texting or e-mailing while operating a moving vehicle or lose 25 percent of their annual federal highway funding.

As a first step, President Obama signed an executive order last week banning all federal workers from texting while driving on government business, driving government vehicles or using government equipment.

Rachana Barai of Myrtle Beach said people should be able to talk on the phone, but not text.

"Your one hand is on the keyboard and the other is on the steering wheel," she said. "You can be a very skilled driver, but you tend to make mistakes when you're texting."

Paul Jankowiak of Myrtle Beach said he's all for the texting ban.

"I so often see people just multitasking in a vehicle, and it's the worst place to multitask," he said. "So many people don't know what that 2,000- to 3,000-pound vehicle can do in a nanosecond if you're not paying attention."

South Carolina does not have a law banning texting while driving, but 18 states - including North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee and Arkansas - have already passed laws making texting while driving illegal, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Myrtle Beach police Capt. David Knipes said texting while driving is a problem.

"You just ride down the street and you'd see it. There's no law against it, so there's not a whole lot we can do at this time," he said. "I'm sure it has caused accidents, but I have no telling exactly how many."

Rep. Carl Anderson, D-Georgetown, said there's been a mention of passing a state law, but that many legislators were waiting to see what would happen on a national level.

"I don't do a lot of texting while driving unless someone [else] is driving, but I do answer my phone, but I try to keep it to a limit," he said. "Some people can control themselves, but when we talk about young people, they get all geared up and they get deep into the conversation and they can't concentrate on the road. They're all into it and their minds are there, too, and a lot of times, they're not paying attention to the road."

The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that 5,870 people were killed and 515,000 were injured last year in crashes connected to driver distraction, often involving mobile devices or cell phones.

Driver distraction was involved in 16 percent of all fatal crashes in 2008 and was more prevalent among young drivers, according to the Transportation Department.

Knipes said he will need some more details about the legislation before he decides on its effectiveness.

If it is passed as a primary reason for law enforcement to pull drivers over, that would be much more beneficial than a secondary reason, which could only be considered after a person was pulled over for another offense, he said.

"Obviously, anything that you can do to focus the driver's attention on the road is a good thing," Knipes said. "Obviously, if you're texting while you're driving, you're not paying proper attention to the road like you should be."

Even people who admit to doing the act say they support the legislation.

"It's hard because I'm guilty of it, but I understand the dangers. I think they should ban it," said Amanda Doyle of Socastee. "It's convenient, but it would make the roads a little bit safer."

Megan Netemeyer of Myrtle Beach called texting while driving "very dangerous."

"I do it and I find myself in sticky situations. I think it should be banned," she said. "I'll be the first person to buy one of those things that you just stick your phone down in and you can talk through your car."
